Actor Ranbir Kapoor has been a fan of the legendary Charlie Chaplin ever since he was a young boy. Who knew that one day he would be doing a film where he too would be required to communicate in a manner similar to Chaplin during the era of silent films?
Ranbir's grandfather Raj Kapoor's 1951 film Awaara had the legendary actor playing a tramp which took references from Chaplin.
Buzz is that when Anurag Basu offered Ranbir the role of Murphy in Barfi!, Kapoor decided to take a trip to New York to watch a Broadway show titled Chaplin - The Musical to prepare for the role.
Even as a child, Ranbir had seen the show a number of times. Apparently, Ranbir was so keen to learn the mannerisms in detail that he remained in New York for a week, to be able to catch the same show seven days in a row.
Ranbir was quoted saying that although the play was an inspiration, they did not copy or try to replicate anything from the show in the film.
Barfi!, directed by Anurag Basu and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz, is set to release on September 14.
Anurag Basu's Barfi!, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Ileana D'cruz and Priyanka Chopra, has passed the censor scanner with flying colours. Barfi! Has received a U-Certificate and interestingly it is the filmmaker's first movie, which has not received an A or U/A certificate.
An elated Basu took to Twitter to express his delight, writing, "Just got the censor certificate, 'Burfii' is my first U certificate film.:)."
Barfi! revolves around Ranbir's character Murphy, who is deaf and mute, and his bitter-sweet relationship with two girls Shruti and Jhilmil, played by Ileana and Priyanka, respectively. The entire team is currently on a promotional spree and the film is expected to hit the theaters on September 14, 2012.
Recently, after Priyanka Chopra got herself tattooed on her arm, her Barfi! co-actor Ranbir Kapoor had also followed suit with a fake tattoo on his arm as a joke. However, the actor recently revealed that he is quite afraid of the painful process that is associated with getting a tattoo.
At a recent promotional event of Barfi!, Ranbir said, "I had done the tattoo as a joke, but in real life, am very scared of tattoos. In fact, I remember that when I got my ears pierced, I had cried for two days!"
Ranbir will be seen playing the role of a deaf-mute young man named Murphy in Anurag Basu's Barfi!, which co-stars Ileana D'Cruz and Priyanka Chopra, who will be seen playing the role of an autistic girl.
Last month, when Priyanka Chopra returned from US, she was seen sporting a new tattoo on her forearm that read, 'Daddy's lil girl'. Chopra has always been known to be extremely close to her father, Ashok Chopra, and so, she got herself inked with that line.
Of late, Priyanka has been promoting her upcoming film Barfi!, directed by Anurag Basu, along with her co-star Ranbir Kapoor. Noticing Priyanka's tattoo, Ranbir too decided to haves some fun, all in good spirit. While promoting their film in London a couple of days back, Ranbir got hold of a pen and wrote, 'Mommys Big Boy', expressing his love for mother Neetu Singh, on his forearm just like Chopra.
The duo then happily posed with their respective forearms, much to the photographer's delight. Having acted together in Anjaana Anjaani, they are set to pair up in Barfi!. The film, also starring Ileana D'Cruz, is set to release on September 14.

After undergoing a makeover for her upcoming film Barfi!, actress Priyanka Chopra felt that her hair style ended up looking like Sachin Tendulkar's.
In Anurag Basu's next film, where Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic young woman named Jhilmil, she had been given a look which is quite different from her usual self. However, once the hair was re-done, the actress ended up looking exactly like Sachin.
Anurag was quoted saying that for the preparation, Priyanka had to meet several autistic kids and that it wasn't pre-planned to make her hair style look like Sachin's. He quipped that it was co-incidental and Priyanka jokingly said, 'Aila, I look like Sachin!' after looking at herself in the mirror.

After a busy schedule of working on her international music debut, actress Priyanka Chopra is off to London to promote her upcoming film Barfi!.
The 30-year-old actress tweeted, "London bound! So excited about promoting Barfi! The film and my single comes the same time, and such different vibes to both! Very grateful."
In Barfi!, Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic girl alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Also, she will be making her debut as a singer with the song 'In my city', featuring Will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas fame. The single will be launched on September 13 as a part of 'Thursday Night Kickoff', a pre-game show of NFL Network's Thursday Night Football.
While Barfi! is set to release on September 14, the song and the video will be released officially later this year.

Ranbir Kapoor's last film Rockstar was a major hit, mainly because of the music composed by AR Rahman, which became quite the rage amongst the youth. However, the Kapoor crown prince recently declared that the music of his upcoming Barfi! is better than that of Rockstar!
Sources claim that Kapoor was constantly involved during the making of the music of the film and was so impressed with Pritam for his composition that he sent a text message to Pritam, saying that the music of Barfi! is better than that of the Imtiaz Ali directed Rockstar.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu has a very unique way of storytelling. While working on Basu's upcoming film Barfi!, even the cast of the film including Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz remained clueless about the ending of the film. This is because Basu does not believe in keeping the screenplay of his films with him during narration schedules.
Ileana was under the impression that this would be a typical masala film but was pleasantly surprised when she discovered that she plays a serious Bengali girl.
Priyanka too, has stated that she never got a narration of the film and it was only Ranbir who had gotten one. Ranbir, on his part, says that there was no format in which the film was made and that the schedules kept changing during the narration.
Anurag Basu also maintained that he is a lazy narrator and that the only wholehearted narration he gave was to Ranbir and the producers.
Barfi! is set to release on September 14.
Cousins Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor will share the stage on the popular singing reality show Indian Idol 6 to promote their respective films, Heroine and Barfi!.
Sources claim that Kareena and Ranbir will be coming together for the grand finale of Indian Idol 6 on August 31.
While Kareena plays the role of a superstar Mahi in Madhur Bhandarkar's film Heroine, Ranbir essays the role of Murphy, whom everyone calls Barfi.
Ranbir's character is that of a prankster, who charms one and all even though he is deaf and mute. Actress Priyanka Chopra plays an autistic character, Jhilmil, in the film.
Buzz was that the two cousins were set to star together for the first time on silver screen in Zoya Akhtar's film. It would be great to see how the Kapoor siblings, both superstars in their own right, bond on the sets of the reality show.
Ranbir Kapoor's character, from his upcoming film Barfi! is garnering a lot of attention and apparently Ranbir took inspiration from his late grandfather's onscreen characters, for his look in the movie.
Ranbir's look in Barfi! has a lot in common with Raj Kapoor's look in Awara and Shree 420. The 29-year-old actor essays the role of Murphy aka Barfi, who is deaf and mute, in the film. Kapoor is seen with a thin moustache in the flick and will also be seen donning a hat and carrying an umbrella, very much akin to his granddad's filmy avatar.
Anurag Basu, the director of the film agrees, that his lead actor's look is inspired by the likes of Raj Kapoor, Charlie Chaplin and Roberto Benigni. He took pointers from their onscreen characters because he wanted to make Murphy lovable.
Barfi! also stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'cruz in the lead roles alongside the Rockstar and is slated to hit the big screens on September 14, 2012.
Buzz is that Shiney Ahuja was offered a small role in the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi!, but the actor turned it down. Anurag Basu and Shiney Ahuja are good friends having worked in the 2006 film Gangster before. However, Shiney is looking for a bigger comeback and so, turned down the offer.
The actor, who is currently out on bail in 2009 rape case he was accused in, is looking for a good comeback after his last film Ghost bombed at the box-office.
Shiney, living in Delhi these days, recently said that he considers Anurag like his brother and that there were talks going on but then it wasn't discussed again. He added that he has got offers but nothing has been good enough and that he is in talks with a couple of directors.
Ever since Barfi! went on floors, there has been tremendous speculation around the part that Ranbir Kapoor plays in his film. While it was declared quite early in the day that he would be playing a deaf and mute young man in the film, there was also a strong buzz around him imitating Charlie Chaplin for a large part of the narrative. The theatrical promo that was recently unveiled further reaffirmed the fact that there were definite characteristic traits of the legendary actor that Ranbir had adopted for the film. Now that the film is gearing up for release, director Anurag Basu uncovers the mystery.
"Let me be honest here. The whole Chaplin influence was not there in the script when Ranbir came on board. In fact till the first day of the film's shoot, we hadn't planned anything around these lines. It is just that as we progressed, it was felt that certain scenes would be elevated if Ranbir got into that mode. So yes, there is silence in the film, something which is the core of it, and there is a Chaplin layer to it as well that has been introduced. However it isn't as if Ranbir is imitating Charlie Chaplin throughout the film. You can pretty much make out from the promo itself that Barfi! isn't set in Chaplin-sque mode", says Anurag.
What was decided though much before the film went on floors was to feature Ranbir Kapoor as the central protagonist in it. The youngster was Anurag's first choice and at least momentarily he didn't really have a Plan B in place in case Ranbir would have opted out.
"When I started work on the film, it was on a blank slate", says Anurag who has to credit films like Life In A Metro, Gangster and Murder, "As and when I moved ahead with the story, I realised that the only person who would have fit into the role was Ranbir. All other characters, including that of Priyanka Chopra, came in later. In fact I approached Ranbir also when everything was completed on paper."
Now we wait to see how it translates on the big screen as well once the film releases all over on 14th September.
